Six Qualifying Matches Completed at Southern Methodist University Tennis Center
Tyler, TX (October 28, 2020) – The day started with unfavorable conditions but thanks to a swift decision by tournament officials, six qualifying matches were completed at Southern Methodist University’s indoor tennis facility in Dallas, Texas this evening.
Only two matches of the day forced a third-set tiebreaker. University of Virginia athlete Emma Navarro fought off an early lead by #10 seed Gabriela Talaba to take the first set 7-6(2). Unfortunately, the momentum was not enough to carry the young American before Tabala closed out the match 6-0, 10-4.
Katarzyna Piter came out swinging against #6 seed Mayo Hibi, taking the second set in the tiebreak. Despite the comeback, the Japanese seed prevailed in a 10-5 third set finish.
Meanwhile, seeds Clara Tauson (#2) and Ankita Raina (#5) made swift work of their opponents, winning 6-2, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-2, respectively.
American baseliner Jamie Loeb found herself evenly matched with alternate Paula Kania-Chodun, but in the end managed to fight off drop shots and angles to grind out the victory 7-6(5), 6-4.
The last match of the night was a slugfest between #8 seed Georgina Garcia-Perez and Alycia Parks, the latter of who had knocked out #13 seed Gabriela Ce on Monday. Despite the 19 year-old American’s heavy hitting, she was unable to overpower the Spaniard, falling 4-6, 4-6.
The remaining three singles qualifying matches will start the day tomorrow, followed by Main Draw singles and doubles competitions.
