Bellis, Li Survive Day of Upsets; Zamarripa Twins Knock Out #1 Seeds

Tyler Athletic and Swim Club Hosts Day 5 of USTA Pro Circuit Event

Tyler, TX (October 30, 2020) – Only seeds 7 and 8 remain in Singles and 4 in Doubles after a competitive slew of upsets at Friday’s Bellatorum Resources Pro Classic, a USTA Pro Circuit event.

The first R16 singles match on Center Court set the tone for the day when Qualifier Clara Tauson eliminated #1 Seed and world No. 58 Shelby Rogers in a hard-hitting three setter. The trend continued as tour veteran and former world No. 5 Sara Errani fought back from a 2-6 deficit to knock out #2 seed Misaki Doi.

American and #7 seed Ann Li has yet to lose a set in the tournament, taking out Paula Kania-Chodun 6-2, 6-2, then qualifier-to-beat Tauson 6-3, 7-5 in the quarters.

American sensation CiCi Bellis rallied from a set down to take the win against her friend and qualifier Jamie Loeb in an evenly-matched three setter. In the quarters, Bellis came out swinging and ripped the first set 6-0 from #4 seed Bolsova Zadoinov. A contested line call shifted the momentum and leveled the match as Bolsova Zadoinov reclaimed the second set 6-2. The final set stayed close until Bellis eventually moved the needle with a passionate “come on!” to end the battle 7-5.

The match of the day took place in the doubles quarters as alternates Allura and Maribella Zamarripa squared up against the #1-seeded American duo Caroline Dolehide and Caty McNally. The twins, seemingly unphased by the stiff competition across the net, had an answer for every shot that came their way. Despite falling 6-4 in the second set, the sisters and University of Texas commits kept their cool and cemented their spot in the semis with a 10-4 third-set tiebreaker victory.

Singles and Doubles semifinals will begin on Center Court at Noon CST tomorrow.
